School Day
Free Victory Days Tickets for School Group Activities!
Friday, October 3 at Hulman Field, is designated “School Day” during Victory Days 2008 and we are planning the entire day around students of every age category. Students, teachers, and parents from all over central Indiana are invited for a day of experiential learning at our exclusive 1940’s era living museum.
“Our vision is for a sea of yellow school buses to be in the parking areas on opening day. Professional educators are developing appropriate and age based curriculum that aligns with state standards so students come away with real and lasting lessons learned.”
- - - Paul King, Executive Director, Victory Days
We’ve Got Bragging Rights
Dr. Suellen K. Reed, Superintendent of Public Instruction, Indiana Department of Education enthusiastically supports the event, is serving as an advisor, and has assigned staff members as liaisons to Victory Days in the area of curriculum development.
The Indiana House of Representatives and Indiana Senate have passed Concurrent Resolution #28 that recognizes the annual Victory Days event as a living history museum designed to honor, preserve, and perpetuate the memory and sacrifices made by Americans during World War II.
The Terre Haute Airport Authority publicly proclaimed its support for Victory Days and has asked the community to support the event organizers and showcase the “unexpected, & unforgettable.”
A Call for Community Support
This educational event would not be possible without the generous support of our community partners. Dollars are needed in the months leading up to the event to fuel the development of a quality event and to ensure that something as basic as gas money does not keep a particular school from attending this outstanding educational event.
To that end, we have developed a scholarship program as a way for the community to get involved. A $20 Victory Days School Day Scholarship will provide a ticket for School Day admittance, age appropriate participant materials, refreshments, and transportation allowance for one student.
Go to the Scholarship Commitment Form and choose the level of involvement that is best for your organization. If you have questions about contributing to the Scholarship program please contact Greg Dupuis.
Experiential Learning Opportunity
Victory Days staff educators, in conjunction with representatives from Indiana Department of Education are working together to create an educational field trip for students that inspires excellence, enhances understanding of American and foreign history surrounding WWII and puts the experiences of 1940’s Americans into present day perspective. Teachers can customize their own learning adventure or let us provide a pre-determined age-appropriate program from the following planned elements:
- Experience an active U.S. Army airfield from the 1940’s
- Learn what was going on in the home front to support the war efforts such as quilting, conserving and the planting of Victory Gardens
- Take part in a mission briefing
- Watch authentic battle demonstrations and air drops
- Visit a mess operation where the daily fare sustained the troops
- Tour a battalion field hospital where many lives were saved
- Experience a military encampment
- Experience a live 1940’s radio show
- Visit static displays ranging from war birds, historic aircraft, and small arms and weapons
- Walk among vintage cars, tractors, tanks, trucks, jeeps and aircraft used in actual missions
- Experience the post exchange featuring WWII memorabilia
